Indian Heritage Centre
Singapore
2011
This is a platform to showcase the history, heritage and culture of Indians in Singapore. The building is visually and physically permeable at ground level to encourage street activity and the public to circulate through the site and explore internal public spaces. Central to this permeability is the rejuvenation of a disused back lane into a peaceful ‘scent garden’ and pedestrian thoroughfare.

An articulated ‘silver wedge’ building form housing exhibition spaces reinforces the urban grain of the conservation streetscape. It is elevated over the ground plane to create and shade ground floor civic space.

Deep slanted embrasure crenel-like windows make reference to ancient Indian Fort architecture, lined in rich colours of the spectrum that express the vibrancy, diversity and depth of Indian culture. A glazed lattice screen reveals open staircases at one end.
