Our proposal for the new extension to Gunnar Asplund’s famous Stockholm Library was conceived around the idea of a new ‘living room’ for the City facing the existing hill park and Observatory.

A grand sweeping stair in the ‘living room’ links the library floors and provides sweeping views to the hill. The southern orientation of the ‘living room’ enables natural warmth and daylight to be trapped within the four-storey space during the colder months.

The external skin and structure of the library is influenced by the curvilinear forms of Scandinavian furniture, articulated with the use of emerging cross-laminated timber construction technology.
