Millions of people gather in Mecca for the 12-day Hajj pilgrimage event, This proposed elevated rail system has the capacity to transport millions of pilgrims to the sacred sites throughout the Hajj.

The design of 9 elevated stations with 300m platforms, ventilated via a ‘desert cooling’ system, incorporates a unique system of boarding and alighting. Very wide stepped ramps and lifts are employed to convey the sheer volume of people. Circulation movement at a very slow pace and separation of boarding/alighting flows via different levels is essential for safety and security.

To reinforce this circulation diagram, the architecture of the station roof is formed from alternating sinusoidal waves to accentuate access points to the elevated platform. This also echoes the undulating mountainous topography of this desert region.
